Photodynamic Therapy Los Angeles
Acne Treatment

Acne occurs when skin pores, tiny holes on the surface of the skin, get clogged by oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. Pores on the human body contain sebaceous glands, which play an important role in healthy skin function; however, acne occurs when these glands become obstructed and inflamed. Most people associate acne with adolescence, but acne can continue into adulthood, and acne scars can last a lifetime. Nearly 75% of teenagers will experience acne, as acne is usually caused by an increase in testosterone, which increases in both males and females during puberty. Acne diminishes over time, but the amount of time that it takes to diminish varies in each individual. In some cases, acne can extend past middle age.

There are many factors associated with the development and severity of acne, including hormonal, genetic, bacterial presence (P.acnes), stress levels, and diet. Not only can acne cause permanent scarring, but it can also have psychological effects, such as low self-esteem and even depression. Acne scars are caused by skin inflammation that occurs as a result of acne.

The most common scars appear as indentations on the skin’s surface and will not go away without treatment. As such, good skincare and acne treatments are advocated by many medical professionals. Dr. Daniel Behroozan, a board certified dermatologist who offers many acne treatments and solutions in his practice, is eager to help his patients resolve their acne issues. The treatments below are all offered at Dr. Behroozan’s Dermatology Institute of Southern California.

  • Photodynamic acne therapy can be used to treat both active acne and minimize the appearance of acne scars. During this treatment, a substance called Levulan is applied to your skin. Then a specific wavelength of light is applied to your skin to activate the Levulan. Once activated, the Levulan works to reduce bumps, decrease oiliness, minimize appearance of pores, and improve the overall texture of skin, without any systemic side effects. Photodynamic acne therapy is an excellent alternative to Accutane, which has many undesirable side effects.

  • Blu-U Blue Light therapy is similar to photodynamic acne therapy, and can be used with or without Levulan. This treatment specifically targets the bacteria, P.acnes, that is known to cause acne. The sessions take about 15 minutes and will occur twice per week, over several weeks. Blue-U Blue Light can be combined with Levulan therapy to fight the toughest acne and provide great results.

  • Obagi Blue Peel can help rejuvenate skin and improve many cosmetic conditions, including acne. This chemical peel is applied in Dr. Behroozan’s office, and works by removing the surface layers of the skin, taking with it skin imperfections. After the recovery period, skin will look fresher and younger.

  • Fraxel laser treatment is used to treat acne scars in patients who have suffered from moderate to severe acne. This is a "fractional" treatment, meaning that it creates many microscope holes in the skin, but leaves the skin surrounding these holes intact. The microscopic holes trigger the body’s natural processes to produce new collagen and skin cells, thus repairing acne scars and other cosmetic complaints.

  • V-beam laser treatment can be used to reduce both acne and acne scars. It is a gentle process that targets selected areas of your skin for repair. The upper layer of the skin is protected during the treatment by the use of a cooling mist, which is applied to the skin before each laser pulse. V-beam treatments should not be used on individuals with dark skin.

  • QuadraLASE Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment is one of the most advanced treatments available today to treat acne scars. Like other laser treatments, a laser will create tiny holes in the skin, which will trigger the body to produce new collagen, resulting in firmer skin and a reduction of scarring.

Dr. Behroozan’s offers the latest options in acne and acne scar treatment at the Dermatology Institute of Southern California. With the varied treatment options, you are sure to find a solution that will work to improve your skin and increase your self-confidence.
