The Fraxel treatment is FDA approved for treating surgical scars, acne scars, and skin resurfacing. This non-invasive procedure removes the scars without damaging the remaining skin.
The success rate of the Fraxel treatment depends up on many factors and varies from patient to patient. Most of the patient who suffered from acne scars were thrilled to see the results of the procedure done by Dr. Behroozan. Other patients who are suffered from deep scars required other skin treatments in addition to the Fraxel laser treatment. Although this is true, you can see an immediate result within a short period of time through the Fraxel laser treatment compared to other treatments. The result of Fraxel laser treatment is progressive and it may take 3-5 treatments in sessions that are 1-3 months apart.
The tolerance level of pain differs from one patient to another. Generally, topical anesthesia will be applied on the skin and to reduce the discomfort of the treatment, the dermatologist will use cold air. A majority of patients compare undergoing the Fraxel laser treatment to prolonged exposure to the sun. The discomfort of the procedure will last only about 1-3 hours.
It is recommended that after having the Fraxel laser treatment that you apply a sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Direct exposure to the sun should be avoided, and a hat is recommended as well. Typically these precautions should be followed for at least 3 months after your last Fraxel laser procedure.
The normal side-effects include swelling, redness, dry skin, itching, bronzing, and peeling of the skin. Some patients also experience the occurrence of whiteheads.
The Fraxel laser procedure produces several small deep columns in the skin called microthermal zones. The old epidermal cells are removed by this treatment. The laser penetrates deep into the dermis, but it will not affect the surrounding areas of the skin. It also penetrates the protective non-living barrier of the skin to treat the deeper layers of the skin. This very precise treatment of the skin allows the body to heal the treated surface quickly.
The Fraxel laser procedure takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
There are three types of Fraxel lasers available for the treatment of acne scars. The technology applied in these lasers is known as fractional photothermolysis and it allows the doctor to treat the skin in microscopic volumes. The three types of lasers are Re:fine, Re:store, and Re:pair. Re:fine is the most gentle of the three in which the dermatologist uses a fiber laser and lower energy levels for the treatment. Re:store is the dual fractional laser procedure for treating the acne scars. The Fraxel Re:pair is the newest CO2 laser treatment which eliminates all the skin layers from the treatment area.
