FAQs on Fraxel Anti-Aging Treatment

What are the causes of aging skin?

As each of us grows older, daily exposure to the sun and other environmental elements can result in broken capillaries, age spots, sunspots and increased roughness in our skin. All of these factors contribute to dehydrating the connective tissues in the skin, causing the gradual breakdown of collagen, a natural substance in the body that is key to keeping skin looking young and radiant.

Are Fraxel treatments effective for anti-aging?

Yes, Fraxel laser procedures are an innovative method of repairing aging skin. The laser triggers the body's natural healing process by damaging healthy skin tissues in a safe, controlled way. The wounds created by the laser eventually heal by forming collagen fibers, which helps to reduce spots and wrinkles and improve the texture of the skin.

What are the benefits of Fraxel anti-aging treatment?

The primary benefit of a Fraxel anti-aging treatment is the ability to produce dramatic results without the prolonged downtime commonly required for laser procedures. Cosmetic results include the elimination of "crow's feet," or fine lines around the eyes, and the unveiling of youthful and refreshed skin without any unwanted pigmentation or blemishes. The treatment is also effective in removing surgical scars and acne scars efficiently. Fraxel treatments can be used to address skin on any part of the body.

How does the Fraxel laser procedure work?

The Fraxel laser procedure works by treating thousands of microscopic skin columns, reaching deep into the tissue to expedite the production of collagen and restore fresh, radiant skin. The fractional method of treating specific zones across the skin's surface helps to minimize recovery time by limiting the exposure of healthy tissue to the laser's thermal energy. The end result is a reduction in scars and wrinkles and improvements in the tone, texture, color, and elasticity of the skin.

Is it possible to wear makeup or shave after the treatment?

Fraxel laser treatments are so gentle that patients can wear makeup or shave immediately following the procedure. Results are also often visible immediately following the procedure, though improvements will continue to progress over several months.

What preparations must take place before undergoing the Fraxel treatment?

Before undergoing the treatment, Dr. Behroozan recommends that you apply a moisturizer twice daily for two weeks. At the time of consultation, he will advise you on the ideal moisturizer to use and what to avoid before the treatment. On the day of the procedure, Dr. Behroozan will begin by washing the treatment area thoroughly and applying an anesthetic cream about one hour before the treatment to help numb the skin.

Which treatments can be combined with the Fraxel laser treatment?

Combination treatments are common for Fraxel procedures. Intense Pulse Light is often paired with Fraxel to eliminate dilated blood vessels, redness and brown spots. This combination can also be used to tighten skin as well as pores. Deep wrinkles can also be removed by combining Botox with the Fraxel laser procedure. Other treatments commonly used in tandem with Fraxel lasers include fillers, such as Radiesse, Juvederm or Restylane to remove furrowed brows, plump lips and wrinkles.

Are Fraxel treatments effective in treating sun damage and pre-cancers (actinic keratosis)?

Sun damage is one of the most common signs of aging and usually appear on the hands and face. They are not threatening to your health, but most patients are self conscious about how large or dark they are. Fraxel treatments are a gentle, non-invasive way to diminish the effects of sun damage and also treats other irregularities in skin pigments.

Fraxel lasers can also perform skin resurfacing. Actinic keratosis is a pre-cancerous skin condition that appears as red scaly patches, and can eventually lead to skin cancer if left untreated. The Fraxel treatment is FDA approved to remove and resurface the skin to look more smooth and toned.
