Blu-U Blue Light and Levulan Combination Acne Treatment
The Dermatology Institute of Southern California is pleased to offer Blu-U Blue Light and Levulan, two of the most powerful acne treatments available. When used together in a treatment called Levulan Photodynamic Therapy, Blu-U Blue Light and Levulan fight even the toughest acne to make skin clearer, smoother and more radiant.
In Levulan Photodynamic Therapy, treatment begins with the application of Levulan, a solution also known as Amino-Levulinic Acid, on all of the affected areas. Then, the individual receiving the treatment will wait about an hour or two to allow the Levulan to saturate deep into the skin. After this waiting time, the individual puts on protective goggles and sits in front of the Blu-U Blue Light. The Blu-U Blue Light portion of the treatment takes about 15 minutes.

During the Blu-U Blue Light portion of the treatment, individuals may experience a burning sensation on the areas where the Levulan was applied. In order to alleviate this discomfort, individuals may request a topical anesthetic prior to treatment.
After the Levulan Photodynamic Therapy, individuals are cautioned to remain out of sunlight for at least 24-48 hours. This is because the skin is extremely sensitive to light during recovery time. During recovery, the skin will undergo a cycle: the areas where the Levulan was applied may become hyperpigmented and scaly. It may also begin to peel. Skin may swell and become itchy, and moisturizing cream and/or pain medication such as ibuprofen can help. Additionally, individuals should not be surprised if more acne appears as the skin pushes out the remaining impurities through the pores. This is a normal part of the Levulan Photodynamic Therapy.
After about a week, skin will significantly improve. The Levulan and Blu-U Blue Light treatment’s results last for at least four months after treatment, and individuals may return for more treatments if necessary.
