Chemical Peels
Chemical peels can gradually fade age spots, but several treatments are necessary before you notice any results. A chemical peel involves applying an acid, which gently peels the outer layer of skin, to the age spots. As your skin peels, new skin forms to take its place. Glycolic acid is derived from sugar-crops such as sugarcane, sugar beets, pineapple, cantelope, and unripe grapes. It is used to improve the skin's appearance and texture. It may reduce wrinkles, acne scarring, brown spots and improve many other skin conditions. Once applied, glycolic acid reacts with the upper layer of the skin and allowing the outer skin to "dissolve" revealing the underlying, healthier, smoother, brighter-looking skin.
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a deep peeling agent. Trichloroacetic acid peels are used to smooth out fine surface wrinkles, remove superficial blemishes and correct skin pigment problems. TCA peels may require repeat treatment to maintain results and require the use of sunblock for several months (this is a must). The skin may take several days to heal depending on how deep the peel.
